Antique Wardrobe, Baltimore Winged Mahogany, c. 1825

Attention: A wonderful find has presented the Friends of Belair Estate with a truly exciting opportunity!

Please help with the purchase of this wardrobe; no amount is too small

In December 2005, an Antique Dealer in Maryland, contacted the Museum office and is in possession of a high style Baltimore 1820's mahogany wardrobe with desk. It has an irrefutable Ogle family history through George Cooke Ogle's descendants.  George Ogle was the last Ogle master of Belair. His father's 1844 probate inventory lists a mahogany wardrobe valued at ten dollars; it is the most expensive single piece of furniture in the entire house.

The wardrobe is offered to the Belair Mansion at a substantial discount. The price is $28,0000.00; and is extended to the Mansion for $24,000.00!!

The Friends of Belair Estate have provided their considerable support of acquisitions at Belair Mansion for many years; as an example, the purchase of the Four original 1740's paintings of "The Seasons" by Philippe Mercier in 1997. The purchase of the Ogle wardrobe is as significant to the nineteenth-century story as the paintings are to the eighteenth-century history.

The Friends of Belair Estate sincerely hope they can count on all of us again to help with the purchase of such a wonderful find.  The purchase of this wardrobe is a significant step in recreating Belair and the lives of those who lived there. It is the hope that you will help to make this important purchase a reality.

"Belair From the Beginning"

After more than twenty years, Shirley Baltz has revised her thorough history of the Belair Estate. First offered in 1977 as part of the Bowie American Bicentennial Committee’s Belle Air in Bowie: Its Families & History, in 1984 the Friends of Belair Estate published an expanded revision as A Chronicle of Belair.
In the early days of colonial Maryland, hundreds of tracts of land were patented to the settlers and planters who flocked to the Chesapeake Bay. Belair, patented as Catton and renamed in 1721, has been part of Maryland’s recorded history for over three hundred years. Its owners in the eighteenth century were from prominent families. In the nineteenth century times were harder and hit their lowest ebb in several decades following the Civil War. Brighter and more prosperous days surrounded the thoroughbreds of the twentieth century.

Newly revised and expanded, Belair from the Beginning will be available through the shop in the near future for $20.00 + tax, Shipping is extra. For more information, call 301-809-3089 or email the department at museumevents@cityofbowie.org
